Handcrafted Runes

Runes bought from NPCs have 70% power; runes crafted by players have 100%.

On Legacy, a rune you make yourself is stronger than one bought in a shop. Runes sold by NPCs have 70% power, while runes crafted by players the classic way have 100% power.

How to tell them apart

A handcrafted rune has the same art as the shop rune, plus a golden sparkle in the top right corner. Looking at it shows: "Crafted by hand: it holds the full power of the spell."

How to craft a rune

  1. Carry a blank rune in your inventory (it doesn't need to be in your hand).
  2. Say the rune's magic words, with enough mana and soul.
  3. A blank rune turns into the rune, already with the golden sparkle and 100% power.

The rune must belong to your vocation, and you need the required level and magic level. Blank runes are sold by magic NPCs or dropped by creatures. Check each rune's words, mana and requirements on the Spells page.

What changes between them

A shop rune has 70% of the effect of a handcrafted one:

  • Damage and healing: SD, GFB, Avalanche, UH, IH and the other attack or healing runes deal and heal 70% of the value.
  • Fields, walls and bombs: fire, energy and poison fields last 70% of the time.
  • Magic Wall and Wild Growth: the wall disappears after 70% of the time.
  • Paralyze and Chameleon: the effect lasts 70% of the time.
  • Soulfire: the burn lasts fewer rounds.

Utility runes such as Cure Poison, Destroy Field, Convince Creature, Disintegrate and Animate Dead work the same in both versions.

Tips

  • The two versions are different items: they don't stack together, and a hotkey for one won't use the other.
  • Making your own runes, or buying from players who make them, gives more value per charge.
